Q: What is your design philosophy?

A: Mark Rantin Architecture believes in crafting spaces that grow with you and adapt to life's milestones. Our approach is to design homes that not only meet your current lifestyle but also anticipate the changes that life may throw your way. Whether it's a growing family, operating a business, entertaining family and guests, or simply the desire for more space, we create adaptable and lasting solutions. Your home becomes a partner in your journey, evolving alongside you while maintaining its unique charm and functionality.

Q: What types of projects do you specialise in?

A: We specialise exclusively in residential architecture, from custom home design to heritage renovations, and all architectural challenges in between. Based in Taupo, we provide residential architecture solutions throughout New Zealand with over 30 years of focused expertise.

Q: What makes your residential architecture services unique?

A: Our residential architectural services are the result of many years of experience and training to achieve the best result for your project. We provide excellent residential architecture solutions and innovative design with the care and professionalism your project deserves. Every project receives our focused expertise and attention because we work exclusively in residential architecture.

Q: Do you work outside of Taupo?

A: Yes, while we're based in Taupo, we provide residential architecture services throughout New Zealand. Our Designing Moves consultancy service is available in-person for Taupo residents and their families, with virtual consultations available for other locations by arrangement.

Q: What is the Wilson House project?

A: We're currently renovating the Wilson House in Taupo, following Claude Megson's original plans and design ideas. As a student in Megson's studio at Auckland University in the early 1980s, Mark Rantin has valuable insight into Claude's theories of 1970s family home design. It is a privilege to be the current custodians of this heritage home.

Q: What construction methods do you work with?

A: Selection of durable and cost-effective systems is a priority when choosing the right system for your home. We have extensive experience with various construction methods including masonry, brick, Nu Wall systems, timber framing, concrete, and mixed materials. Our diverse portfolio demonstrates our ability to work with the construction approach that best suits your project requirements and budget.

Q: How does your initial consultation process work?

A: We will initially give you a call to establish contact and chat about your plans - allow half an hour. Once we understand the scope of the project, we'll agree with you on an initial hourly rate and the number of hours (we suggest 20 hours for most projects) you want to commit to pre-planning for your project, and arrangements for your first appointment.

Q: What is included in your Pre-Planning Service?

A: Our pre-planning service includes collating available information (council records, existing plans, geomaps etc.) and providing evaluation of project opportunities through a Feasibility Report. A site visit may be arranged depending on your location and needs, and available information. This service does not provide a Sketch Design, but will help you set the parameters for an efficient and practical design experience.

Q: Can I credit my pre-planning fees toward a full project?

A: Yes, fees for pre-planning services can be credited against full service proposal scale fee design projects. We recommend this stage before a decision to proceed with a full architectural service is entered.
